Selecting the material for the hardware required
Based on use frequency, finish required, environmental conditions, specific benefits sought and other constraints, we help you choose proper material suitable for your need. Some information related to available material types and their properties is given below.
Iron/ Steel: Iron is a silvery white natural element. Steel is an alloy consisting of iron. It rusts easily in moist air and is attracted by a magnet. It is also low in tensile strength and ductility. But still is used due to Low Cost, High Compressive Strength. They are used in Wrought Iron decorative hardware, Hinges, Lock bodies and Cylinders. The finish achieved is not very attractive in this case.
Stainless Steel 304: Stainless Steel is an alloy mainly containing iron, chromium and nickel. The percentage of chromium and nickel define the rust resistance of different grades of stainless steel. SS 304 has the most desirable combination making it highly rust resistant, but as it contains some amount of iron it will rust over a period of time irrespective of its grade. Stainless Steel material can be lacquered to enhance durability. It is the most commonly used material along with Brass in the hardware industry. SS 304 is less expensive as compared to SS 316 and more expensive as compared to brass, zinc & aluminium and other grades of steel in the series of 200 and 400.
Brass: Brass consists mainly of copper and does not possess iron. Thus, it does not rust at all but the finish gets dull over a period of time and requires repolishing. Brass hardware can be plated to achieve different finishes like Antique, Satin, Chrome and so on. Also in India brass is easily available at comparatively low prices and so is extensively used for manufacturing hardware products.
Zinc: Zinc like brass is non-ferrous and thus non-rusting. Zinc is nowadays becoming popular amongst hardware users due its properties like non-rusting, low cost and easy availability. It is light in weight and not suitable for heavy doors & security doors. Also the finish attained on Zinc is not as attractive as that on SS and Brass.
Aluminium: Aluminium is very light in weight and is suitable for use with light weight doors and aluminium doors. It’s dull finish, low weight carrying capacity and possibility of denting has made it less preferable than the other materials. The advantages of aluminium are that it is low in cost and serves the purpose effectively. Although it is not suitable for security doors.
Selecting the Finish for the hardware required:
Most commonly used finishes are Satin Stainless Steel, Bright Chrome, Antique Brass and Bright Gold. Out of these Satin chrome is the most long lasting finish. Given below is a list of finishes available with us, along with commonly used acronyms for each of them (which we will be referring to, while stating the finish available for particular products through this catalogue).
